Beach party

September 1, 2010

Phuket has been popular with westerners since the seventeenth century, when the Dutch, English, and French all competed for trade dominance over the large island located off Thailand’s southwestern coast in the Andaman Sea. A real island paradise, Phuket has been a popular tourist destination for many years – especially with surfers.

Phuket is the surfing capital of Thailand, and Kata Beach is the surfing capital of Phuket. With nearby Kata Beach Resort, it’s very easy for tourists to catch a wave in the consistent surf of Kata Beach. The beach is crowded during peak tourist seasons, but still very friendly, and always international. It’s not unusual to see surfers from different parts of the world taking a break from the waves to play a little bit of beach volleyball. Thanks to the popularity of surfing at Kata Beach, the biggest surf competition in Phuket is held annually here by Quiksilver.

PHUKET’S Quiksilver 2010 Surf Competition is to stretch over five days from September 22-26 as organisers improve the facilities at Kata beach and add a fashion show and a beach party.

With a viewing stand and judging tower to be erected for the event, it’s almost as though the Phuket surfing title is Kata’s answer to the much-admired women’s beach volleyball that is held annually on neighboring Karon beach.

The beach party and the ”Perfect Idol” fashion show are both scheduled for Sunday, September 26.

Emphasis on the skills of surfers, who are coming from Australia, Indonesia, Japan, US, France, Malaysia, Singapore, Korea, Taiwan and South Africa, is expected to attract 300 Thai and non-Thai competitors.

Last year over 100 surfers from Thailand, Australia, Japan, France, South Africa, Indonesia, Hawaii, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Singapore competed in the two day Island Crown event, and this year promises to be bigger and better with a myriad of events and activities held over the 5-day period that will entice and entertain both surfers and non-surfers alike.
Along with the professionally run international surfing competition, spectators and participants will be treated to concerts, parties, cultural shows, awareness presentations, surf instruction clinics, and a whole lot of fun on the beach.

Endorsed and supported by both government and public sector organizations, the Quiksilver Thailand Surf Competition 2010 will provide local Thai surfers the opportunity to gain valuable experience competing at an international level, getting them familiar with the rules and regulations of ISA sanctioned events and opening the door to competing in ISA competitions held throughout South Asia and the world.

The Quiksilver Thailand Surf Competition takes place during what is typically called the “Low Season”, though surfers have long termed this period the “Surf Season”, and the event brings to light yet another activity which both locals and visitors can enjoy during the Southwest Monsoon, helping to further endorse Phuket as a year-round holiday destination.
