Tourist arrivals from Taiwan to Phuket are set to soar

February 27, 2012

Taiwanese visitor arrival numbers to Phuket this year are expected to double 2011’s figure, a senior government official has announced.

Phuket Provincial Administration Organisation, President Paiboon Upatising said Phuket can expect up to 100,000 Taiwanese arrivals in 2012, double the 50,000 figure recorded last year, the Phuket Gazette reported.

The forecasted figure was announced after the “Phuket Road Show and Table Top Sales” tourism promotion in Taipei and Taichuang last month.

Mr Paiboon said that Taiwan was an “interesting” source market for visitors to Phuket.

“The country has more than 20 million people, but not many Taiwanese visit Phuket. A lot more Taiwanese traveled to Phuket before the Boxer Day 2004 tsunami hit Phuket,” Mr Paiboon said.

“Before the tsunami, there used to be more than 200,000 Taiwanese arrivals in Phuket each year. After that, their new holiday destinations were Japan, the Philippines and Bali.

“These destinations have a lot more flights [from Taiwan], making it convenient for them to travel to,” he said.

Mr Paiboon said at the moment there are three direct flights per week from Taiwan to Phuket and he was hopeful that Thai Airlines will add flights from Taiwan to Hong Kong soon.

“This will allow more Taiwanese commuters to continue to Phuket via connecting direct flights from Hong Kong,”

Phuket Governor Tri Augkaradacha said since holding discussing with Thai Airlines and the Thai Ambassador he is confident Thai Airways will offer flights from Taipei to Phuket which will result in an increase in tourists to the Island.
