Phuket’s ‘Go Eco Phuket’ event
On September 30th2012 at Chalong Pier Phuket, Phuket’s Democrat MP Mr.Rewat Arerob started the very first “GO ECO PHUKET” event, an event which saw marine debris cleared from the reefs around Koh Hey, Koh Racha Yai, Koh Racha Noi , Phi Phi Island and coral island.
The event was sponsored by PADI and Project AWARE and supported by a large number of dive operators, hotels, and also the Royal Thai Navy.
The activity saw 13 dive boats and nearly 600 participants take part in what is possibly the worlds biggest ever reef cleanup operation, with nearly 15 tons of debris removed from the water. Students from Phuket Rajabhat University also got involved, cleaning up Chalong beach.
Mr.Thanet Mannoi – Director of the Center for Marine and Coastal Conservation 5 said “Marine debris is a major problem which is being taken very seriously by a number of government department, educational institutions and marine and diving businesses. The first “GO ECO PHUKET” event was aimed at raising awareness of the importance of keeping the waters around Phuket debris free and to help reduce the amount of debris. It will also help to promote Phuket’s marine and diving businesses”.
