Koh Samui Yacht Regatta
The sparkling emerald waters around the Thai island of Koh Samui have been even more colorful than normal this week due to the Koh Samui Yacht Regatta.
The premier sailing event began on Saturday in waters off Chaweng Beach, a stunning white stretch of sand which is hugely popular with visitors to Thailand including those who benefit from our Fractional ownership products.
Thailand is emerging as one of the most exciting new yachting destinations, with islands such as Koh Samui being particularly sought after amongst sailors looking for the next Caribbean. Its crystal clear waters, palm-fringed beaches and intimate coves lend themselves to luxury yachting, and organizers of the regatta have been amazed by the level of international interest in the annual sailing event.
But Koh Samui is not just making waves amongst sailors. The island, situated off the east coast of Thailand, is also the focus of a considerable amount of Asian property development, which is changing the face of this country’s third largest island.
Let’s get back to the sea, however, where top international and regional racers have come to battle it out for the regatta’s top prizes. Competitors include strong teams from Great Britain, Hong Kong, Canada, Singapore and Australia, which is incidentally another destination hugely popular with our fractional ownership clients. Also at the regatta, which runs until June 1st, is a team from the Royal Malaysian Navy.
“It’s great to see such a competitive fleet of boats lining up for the Samui Regatta”, race director Simon James said at the launch of this year’s event. “Indeed, across all the classes there are some very evenly matched boats and crews and I’m sure all will enjoy the five days of racing we have planned for them.”
The regatta is not just known for its strong winds and beautiful boats, however. The race is also an important event on the social calendar, with party after party being thrown throughout the week. A highlight of the event is the beach Republic Party, held mid-week, as well as the closing Gala Dinner hosted by Centara Grand Beach Resort Samui, a shining example of an award-winning Asian property development project.
