Travelers continue to flock to Phuket; new terminal expected by 2015
Phuket Airport revealed that its travelers have skyrocketed to 10.9 million this year. In order to alleviate crowding, it has started construction on a new terminal, known as X Terminal, which will support passengers bound for connecting flights.
Director and Independent Director of Airports of Thailand PCL (AOT), Phongsak Semsan, revealed that this year’s passenger growth has increased by approximately 20-30%.
He said the construction of a new 155 million baht terminal for group and charter passengers as well as the new international terminal would allow the growth.
It’s expected to open around the same time or a little before the new international terminal in May, 2015.
He also added that AoT expected to make two billion baht profit on revenue of four billion baht in the full calendar year 2013.
A large group of senior executives came from Bangkok yesterday to lay the foundation stone for Terminal X, which will mostly handle charters and groups.
It is expected that the number of travelers to Phuket by the end of this year will be 11 million. Therefore, the construction plan to add 300 sq.m. to the airport is being implemented; that means having enough restrooms, sufficient check-in counters, and more efficient conveyor belts for luggage.
Other construction plans to ease the crowding also include more aircraft parking pits, parking lots, and a warehouse.
