Asia’s largest multi-hull sailing event, the Top of the Gulf Regatta in Pattaya, will see more than 700 sailors take part, many of them from Phuket.

Local participants in the event, which takes place May 1-5 at the Ocean Marine Yacht Club, include sailors from the Ao Chalong Yacht Club and Phuket Youth Sailing Club (PYSC).

The highly-regarded competition was recognised with the ‘Asian Regatta of the Year’ award at the 2014 Asian Marine and Boating Awards earlier this year.

As part of the regatta, the Thailand Optimist Nationals will take place, pitting young sailors up to the age of 15 against one another in small, single-handed sailing dinghies.

The young members of the PYSC, all of whom are underprivileged children from Phuket Sunshine Village, will send four of their number to compete in the Pattaya championships.

The Phuketians will compete against international boats from Japan, Australia, Singapore, Myanmar, Malaysia, India and other parts of Thailand.

A record fleet is expected to compete in this year’s Top of the Gulf, with more than 250 registered boats ready to set sail.
